Best Things to Do in Austria
By Anatha

Austria is a country that always attracts travellers with its grand imperial heritage and Alpine mountains. Although it's a small country, there are lots of things to do and places to visit. Found right at the centre of Europe, Austria is known as the centre for its aristocratic intrigues and tumultuous historic events.

With a Schengen Visa, you can spend time exploring the country's beautiful cities packed with culture, swim in beautiful lakes, and ski down mountain slopes. Austria is a popular holiday destination among many, and the best things to do in Austria:

1. Visit Salzburg

The historic city hosts various cultural events and has an abundance of historic architecture. Mostly known by its connection with the movie "Sound of Music," it's always a popular tourist attraction with its alpine surroundings. You can go to the Mirabell Palace, which is one of the locations in which the movie was filmed.

There are many captivating places to visit in Alstadt, especially Getreidegasse, known for antique store signs. The town is the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. His home, located at Number 9 Getreidegasse, is now a museum that has family memorabilia, paintings of Mozart, and musical instruments.

2. Visit the Hallstatt Village

This is a picturesque alpine village, and among the best places you should visit in Austria. Buildings and houses are built up on the sides of the mountain, giving it a unique and beautiful look. Spend time and explore the passages of the staircase between some of the mountain-side buildings. In the summer, the lakes are a good place to go boating or for a swim. Here, there are lakeside cafes to relax and enjoy the view. And if you like history, you can take a tour of a centuries-old salt mine, which once drove the economy. This is a beautiful village worth seeing.

3. Drive on the Grossglockner Road

The Grossglockner is one of the highest and largest mountains in Austria. To reach the top, the easiest way is to drive. The road is among the best in the world. It's only a 30-mile-long route, but if you move through the Hohe Tauern National Park, the surrounding view is more magnificent. The landscape, filled with meadow flowers, lakes, rocky cliff faces, and glaciers, makes it a memorable drive. Another place worth visiting is the Swarovski Tower, a platform made of glass, which has optical equipment for viewing the alpine landscape. Other places to catch views from are Edelweissspitze Tower and Kaiser Franz Josefs Hohe.

4. Go Skiing

The Austrian Alps are the best places for skiing. You'll find many ski resorts in the mountains here. Advanced skiers will love the St. Anton am Arlberg terrain, while families can try Kitzbuhel, which is located between Innsbruck and Salzburg. Solden, located near Innsbruck, is a great place for all skill levels. It was used to film one of the James Bond movies. Another popular skiing location, Mayrhofen, has a kids' area and dedicated lift for snowboarders in addition to the massive snowfields.

5. Danube Cycle Path

It is known as the most popular cycle path in Europe, which runs the entire length of the Danube River from Germany to the Black Sea. It has a popular path to ride on from Passau in Germany to Vienna in Austria. This can take 3 to 7 days but as a family, you can enjoy a leisure ride from morning to afternoon. This can be quite an experience.

6. Explore the Eisriesenwelt

Eisriesenwelt in German means "World of the Ice Giants." This ice cave is the largest in the world and is located right outside Salzburg. The cave is at a stretch of 42 kilometres, situated in the Tennengebirge area on the Hochkogel mountain. The cave includes a Posselt Hall, a room with stalagmite known as Posselt Tower. The Great Ice Embankment, a massive formation of 25 metres in height, is known as the greatest ice growth area. Other place to explore is Hymers Castle, the name is taken from a giant in Norse Mythology. Frigga Veil is created by stalactites. It's also called the Ice Organ.

Whether you want to enjoy sceneries, the beautiful towns, attend shows, tour a palace, or go skiing in the Alps, you'll definitely fall in love with Austria. So, do visit!
